Dropout's video hosting platform was just acquired by a firm that uses AI machine learning in their other business.
Main Post:
This feels relevant considering everyone's outspokenness on generative AI, machine learning, and the overall shitification of creatives. It's highly probable that Vimeo will start using their users content for such considering it's what Bending Spoons did with WeTransfer already.
I knew Vimeo's days are numbered but this sucks. You either die the (creative)hero or live long enough to see yourself become the (venture capitalist)villain.
Top Comment: Realy hard to find a good video hosting plateform... the infrastructure it takes is gigantic.

i downloaded a video uploaded on reddit but i’m worried it could have a virus encrypted to it?
Main Post:
There was no link to another website or anything like that, it was literally just a video and i accidentally held my finger over it and clicked download but it saved to my photos not my files. i deleted it, but worried i’ll get some sort of virus because i tend to try to avoid doing that. My IOS is up to date.
Top Comment: So I could just tell you "no, you don't have a virus". But it's important you educate yourself on the matter, because this kind of question comes up A LOT and it's more helpful in the long run to prevent that. Video files generally speaking can't contain malware. Technically they can have malicious data embedded in the file somewhere that can exploit a vulnerability in a specific version of a specific media player, and if you happen to open the file in that software then it might execute that malicious data as code. But the chances of that are incredibly unlikely, and this is one of the reasons why you are constantly told to keep your software up to date for security. The same is true of most non-executable file types - images, audio, config files, documents. If the file doesn't execute, it can't execute malware; but it might potentially have some data or script that tricks the program it opens in to do something malicious. But additionally, Reddit Video - like most media file hosts - re-encodes the videos uploaded to it to ensure a consistent, efficient format for long term storage. So not only would someone have to hide malicious code inside a video that exploits a vulnerability they know about in a video player that you use that hasn't been patched yet, but they'd also need to embed it in a way that survives whatever re-encoding and malware scanning and other processing Reddit does to those uploads. So basically, it's not happening. On top of that, you're using iOS, which compared to a desktop computer implements lots of security protections that prevent a malicious app (or a regular app that has a vulnerability that could cause it to act maliciously) from having much of an impact on the device as a whole. Most apps run in their own little sandbox, they can't interact with other apps on the device, or do anything iOS doesn't let them do; to even access certain critical resources like the camera or shared files, you need to explicitly grant them that permission. Or, the malware needs to be so sophisticated that it can exploit a weakness in iOS itself to gain that access, on top of everything else it's doing. Any individual act above is incredibly unlikely. Like, spy agencies and hacker groups pay many millions to people who discover those kinds of flaws. The idea that the whole chain of them occurs, well let's just say you've got a better chance of being struck by lightning while being attacked by a shark on land after having won a $100 million lottery. I'm not sure what you think encryption is, but it has nothing to do with this.
Do you ever share your videos on Reddit?
Main Post:
I have been trying to figure out how to get more reach on my channel. I have been posting on Twitter, WhatsApp groups and places that I am usually active on but those have small following. I was wondering whether Reddit is a place I could share my videos to? Is there any subreddits you find yourself sharing videos to and do they allow YouTube links to be shared there or do you just wait for the YouTube algorithm Gods to do what they can?
Also what about Facebook?
Top Comment: I'll give you my personal opinion... your own journey may be different. It's very rare that you will find an audience on social media that is not Youtube, unless it's something very specific you are responding to. The only time I would advocate to post on these is if you have something of very specific value to add. As an example, I have a channel which focuses on older games, I recently produced a video on a mod for Quake 2 which someone on social media asked a question relating to, I replied to the post with an answer and a link to my video which contained this answer also. Naturally always ensure the sub rules permit such links. The best things for reach are; Quality Content Good Thumbnails Good Description Hope this helps!
Why cant I right click download some reddit videos?
Main Post:
Ive notice for whatever reason some reddit videos i cant download (Ive also tried with DownloadHelper but cant manage to make it work.)
Top Comment: Some Reddit videos are embedded mp4's. With those, you can right-click and save because they're just normal html elements on the page -- an embedded thing that points to a resource that you can request and download. Other videos use blobs . Blobs are stored in memory. They don't really point to a resource in a traditional sense, so there's nothing for the browser to request. Downloading a blob video is not straightforward because you often need to figure out where the video source is. IIRC reddit's blobby videos use multiple m3u8 playlists, one offering different bitrates for an audio stream and another doing the same for the video. To automate downloading these you need ffmpeg or something like that to "mux" the video and audio together. I'm not familiar with downloadhelper so I don't know if it usually handles these. I'd guess it does but maybe it's failing here because you don't have any backend thing (i.e. ffmpeg) to do the "muxing." yt-dlp can definitely handle all Reddit videos, but it's a commandlne thing and still requires ffmpeg to be installed to do the muxing. Edit: I just spent some time digging around idiotsincars (trying to find a sub with constant video posts) to find a blob video. I use old.reddit and get undownloadable blobs there, but switching to the otherwise awful current reddit, every video is right-click and downloadable. I don't know if something with their video player changed, but maybe using that (if you're not already) is an easy solution.
